Planet Leicester Bakers works across Leicester and Leicestershire, harnessing the power of bread to bring communities together. We seek to break down barriers and enable people to take more control of their bread, and therefore of their health and wellbeing. By doing so, we aim to bridge the gap between lower cost mass produced bread and higher cost ‘artisan’ bread. How? By increasing local people’s bread knowledge, understanding, skills and appreciation of a popular foodstuff so often taken for granted.
‘Sharing Bread’ is Planet Leicester Bakers’ flagship community project. It piloted across Leicestershire in 2015-2016
From carers in Blaby District to estate residents in Agar Nook, Coalville, it delivered training sessions to local people in community kitchens. It taught people how to hand make a simple loaf of bread and encouraged them to share these skills and knowledge with one other person in their social and family network.
By taking part in the training people became Silver Star Planet Leicester Bakers. Then if they demonstrate that they have shared their skills, they graduated to Gold Star status. And all are now members of a growing network of home-bread-bakers in Leicester and Leicestershire!
Planet Leicester Bakers is now looking to extend the project into Leicester City, and even beyond our borders, so get in touch if you’d like to find out more.
Sharing Bread was initially funded by Leicestershire County Council via its ‘Eating Healthy for Less’, Your SHIRE Community Grant. Further funding is now being sought.
“Michelle is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic – a lovely morning!”

‘Sourdough Toasting Together Loaves’
Planet Leicester Bakers offers low price toasting sourdough loaves to local community groups and charities. For only £1 a loaf groups can use the toasting bread to bring people together over toast and tea, raise funds by offering the toast in their cafes, or just to start a conversation about slower bread and food.
So far groups and charities have used the bread to raise funds and start conversations about bread and food through coffee bars, fundraising events and as snacks at well-being events.
Get in touch to find out more and book your sourdough toast!
Information sheets are provided with the bread and feedback is requested.
